Camille Pagán

#1 Amazon Charts Bestselling Author, Master Certified Coach, and Founder of Even Better Co.

Hi, and thanks for stopping by Even Better Co.

You probably won’t be surprised to learn that I always wanted to be an author—and to run my own business instead of spending my days working in someone else’s office. But as the first member of my family to attend college, I felt immense pressure to make the most of my scholarship and do something “safe” and “useful.” After all, I’d heard the stories about starving artists, and most of my relatives worked in the auto industry in Detroit.

Thankfully, several people in my life—including a physician I worked for as a student researcher and my book-loving aunt and uncle—pointed out that I was most likely to succeed by pursuing my passions. I ditched my plan of becoming a doctor and set out to create a career in publishing.

After graduating from the University of Michigan and Harvard’s Radcliffe Publishing Course, I became a magazine editor specializing in health and psychology, then transitioned to a career as an independent journalist in 2004. I’ve written more than 1,000 reported articles for outlets including Forbes, The New York Times, O: The Oprah Magazine, Time, WebMD.com, and Real Simple, where I also served as health editor. For more than a decade, I also ghost wrote and doctored non-fiction books, working on everything from New York Times bestselling series to self-published titles that topped the USA Today list.

Then, after years of wondering if I’d ever do it, I wrote my first novel at age 30, right after my daughter was born. To date, I’ve published ten books, which have been #1 Amazon Charts and Washington Post bestsellers; my second novel, Life and Other Near-Death Experiences, has been optioned for film by Jessica Chastain’s Freckle Films. I’ve sold nearly a million books and my work has been translated into nineteen languages. I recently served as the 2022 and 2023 Guiding Scribe for the Women’s Fiction Writers Association.

Like so many creatives, I used to think I had little control over my career. It wasn’t until I began working with a coach that I discovered I had far more control than I’d realized—and that one seemingly small change after another is what really leads to exponential growth.

Coaching was a complete game-changer for my business—and my life. I learned to work through uncertainty and indecision by asking better questions. I beat burnout by taking control of my calendar, so that I always have time for my writing (even when I had two kids at home in the middle of a pandemic), as well as everything else that’s important to me. I more than doubled my income and figured out how to promote my work in a way that feels authentic instead of salesy.

I loved the coaching experience so much that, although my writing career was thriving, I decided to get certified and then master certified as a coach so I could help others succeed. Over the past five years, I’ve coached hundreds of authors and entrepreneurs.

Here’s what I’ve learned from those amazing clients: if you believe your goals aren’t possible for you, that’s not a sign that you can’t or won’t reach them. You absolutely can. In fact, the benefit of coaching extends beyond strategy and even accountability. When you work with someone who truly believes in you, it’s not long before you can’t help but believe, too.

That’s not woo or toxic positivity. Research shows that positive habits and mindsets—both of which are essential for success and fulfillment—spread from person to person. No matter what your goals, support can be the game-changer in creating an even better career.

Before we work together, you should know:

I believe that integrity is everything.

I offer you the same level of confidentiality you would receive when working with a lawyer or therapist. Everything you discuss and work on during coaching stays between us—period. If you choose to work with me, I’ll provide you with a non-disclosure agreement ensuring this.

Allyship is integral to my business.

My immediate and extended family, and my community, are made up of individuals of different races, ethnicities, and religious and socioeconomic backgrounds—and my coaching and business reflect that. I prioritize working with clients, contractors, and vendors who identify as BIPoC, differently-abled, and/or LGBTQ+.

I believe all people are created equal and must be treated with dignity and respect; and likewise, that all people have the right to self-identify and have their identity be honored.

Your safety and mental health are most important to me.

As a trauma survivor, I know all too well that thought work doesn’t work if you don’t feel safe, autonomous, and supported. In addition to an emphasis on privacy and inclusion, I take a trauma-informed approach in my coaching, courses, and content. I use invitational language and practices—meaning I will ask you if you’d like to try a coaching approach, rather than telling you to do so (you always have the option to opt out of anything I suggest).

Research shows that coaching is incredibly effective—but it’s not right for every person or situation. I will be clear when therapy and/or other resources are more appropriate than coaching.

I may not always get it right—but I am 100% committed to continuing to learn and grow based on my clients’ input and experiences. I am a Fellow Member of the Institute of Coaching at McLean Hospital, a Harvard Medical School affiliate, whose ethics and standards align with my own.
